magimagi - coconut husk fibre, "black" steel posts, LED strip lighting
This piece was designed by Sam and Karen and developed and made in situ by Sam and client Stephen, over several Sundays.
We had always intended for there to be a screen between the living room and courtyard; to define each space and maintain views and light between. Over time the idea for a woven screen evolved; partly in response to Stephen having grown up in Fiji; where traditional buildings are held together and decorated with woven coconut fibre or magimagi. Through friends, and in good Fiji time, Stephen was able to source magimagi directly from Fiji.
The quality and colour of the cordage varied somewhat, as did our patience with weaving it. The result is a very personal response to an everyday architectural problem.
