Blacktown Animal Re-homing Centre – in progress

Blacktown, NSW

Working in collaboration with Tyrrell Studio and Lymesmith, we are designing the Blacktown Animal Re-homing Centre, a $36M multi-functional facility for Blacktown City Council. Our brief is to exemplify the world’s best practice in animal welfare and sustainability. Sited within the Western Sydney Parklands, the building form sits lightly into the landscape drawing parkland views and planting into the kennel areas for the benefit of animals and humans alike. The shelter balances the highly technical requirements of veterinary spaces, on site power generation and water recycling with the need for a robust, functional and beautiful building for animals.

The main challenge for the design of the Blacktown Animal Re-homing Centre is how to change the public’s perception of animal shelters. To meet this challenge we have worked in close collaboration with landscape architects Tyrrell Studio and specialist Lymesmith to ensure that the building provides a beautiful, natural aspect for the animals and humans alike. We have also undertaken inter-state and international study tours to ensure that our design is benchmarked against world’s best practice in animal welfare.
