About us

Established in 1999, Sam Crawford Architects (SCA) is a design driven architectural practice based in Sydney, Australia. Over the last 20 years, we have established a well-earned reputation for design excellence in residential, cultural and public projects. In addition to our expertise in these areas, we’re also commencing our work in the education sector with both private and public clients.

Our work has been widely published, nationally and internationally and has been recognised in numerous local, state and national awards from the Australian Institute of Architects, Australian Timber Design Awards, Local Government Heritage, Conservation and Urban Design as well as numerous industry awards & commendations.

People

Our team of 17 is led by Practice Principal and Design Director, Sam Crawford. Alongside the recognition for his built work Sam is highly regarded within the architectural profession. He has led humanitarian architectural projects, conducted gallery based and built research projects, been invited to serve as head-juror for the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Awards, and was a joint creative-director of the 2014 Australian Institute of Architects National Conference. Sam is co-chair of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Medium Practice Forum, and a member of the Government Architect NSW State Design Review Panel.

With a practice of our size, clients can be assured that Sam is intimately involved in each project. We work in an open-plan studio environment in collaborative teams to ensure the smooth delivery of projects across all scales. Our team is comprised of highly skilled professionals, graduates and students. This mix of team members ensures that each project benefits from the close attention of a dedicated project architect with a support team to efficiently deliver the project. We also have an experienced and dedicated documentation and detailing expert who brings extensive experience of construction detailing to each project.

Sam graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, and in 1997 with a Bachelor of Architecture. He has been a member of the Australian Institute of Architects since 1996 and was registered with the Board of Architects NSW in 2000.

In 1999, Sam established Sam Crawford Architects. The practice’s work has been widely published, nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of numerous local, state and national architecture awards for design excellence including the Australian Institute of Architects Awards in 2003, 2006, 2012, 2016 and 2017, Australian Timber Design Awards in 2002 and 2005, the Vision Award in 2010 and 2017.

Sam participates as a guest design critic at NSW universities and is a regular speaker and contributor to architectural forums and events. Together with Adam Haddow of SJB and Helen Norrie of the University of Tasmania, Sam was the Creative Director of the 2014 National Architecture Conference – themed MAKING – held in Perth, WA. He is currently a member of the AIA NSW Chapter Council, co-chair of the Small/Medium Practice Forum, and the Government Architect NSW State Design Review Panel looking at state significant projects.

As director of Sam Crawford Architects, Sam brings his passion, sensibility and experience to every project in the practice.

Sam lives in Sydney with his wife, artist Jane Crawford, and their four children.

Gabrielle Pelletier

Gabrielle is a registered architect with over 10 years of industry experience across Melbourne and Sydney. Graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2011, Gabrielle moved to Sydney and worked with Welsh + Major Architects where she received the National AIA Heritage Award for the Former Rocks Police Station as the project architect. Gabrielle has since worked as a senior associate with Anderson Architecture, focusing on sustainable design, specifically passive thermal comfort and the integration of landscape and local ecology into the home. She has experience in multi residential, urban planning and social housing in Melbourne at MGS Architects, where she focused on integrated art schemes. Gabrielle joined Sam Crawford architects in 2017, bringing with her these multidisciplinary skills and interests.

Gabrielle is currently studying horticulture to further her passion in landscape and architectural symbiosis. She believes in furthering the industry through academic pursuit and teaches regularly at the University of Sydney.

Ben Chan

Ben has studied and worked in both Hong Kong and Sydney. He completed his Masters of Architecture at the University of New South Wales in 2014. He has worked at a number of leading Sydney practices on both large and small scale commercial and residential projects and has been an integral team member at Sam Crawford Architects since November 2010. He is dedicated and thorough in his work and has led or contributed to several projects including several houses on Scotland Island, the multi-award winning North Bondi Amenities, Cabarita Community Centre, and House for Books. Ben’s 3D visualisation and modelling skills are exemplary.

Ben’s technical skills in computing and technology, and well as his patience and willingness to teach others, make him essential to CAD management within the studio.

As an Associate at Sam Crawford Architects, Ben plays an integral role in the effective management of the practice.

Ben believes that architecture should serve to enrich and enhance the lives of the occupants and the surrounding context and community.
