Easts Rugby Club

ONGOING / Rose Bay, Sydney, NSW

SCA was asked to create a strategic master plan to elevate existing club facilities to a premiership standard, including a grandstand and much-needed change rooms for women’s rugby.

The master plan revitalises the much-loved club house dating from 1965 and navigates its relationship to the adjacent heritage-listed 1927 George Grimley Pavilion. The plan consolidates a number of DA approvals for the club site, whilst enhancing site safety and public connections to the playing field.

A new building responds to the brief for optimum spectator viewing of the pitch while maintaining areas for club members to celebrate together in ‘the mosh’ located in the pitch-side deck area. This was achieved by a raised area which facilitates better sight lines to the fields.

The robust building of sand-coloured masonry speaks to the beach-side geology of the site’s context and a mass timber canopy ties together the new and refurbished existing buildings.

Flexible change rooms can expand to two large spaces or four smaller change rooms as required. This allows four teams to change at the same time or to expand the rooms to allow for additional players/team members, ice baths, massage tables or stretching zones.

The master plan was designed to ensure activities continue uninterrupted whilst building works are being completed, allowing the club to continue its vital role in the community.
