Croydon Park Residence

Wan Country / Croydon Park, NSW

Croydon Park Residence, on the lands of the Wan clan, comprises significant alterations and additions to a single storey soldier settlement cottage. The brief was to refurbish the existing interior spaces to comfortably accommodate a multi-generational family, and extend at the back with new living and outdoor spaces.

Located in a heritage conservation zone, a sensitive rear extension was added, with a skillion roof that tilts up to the north, allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into the plan. The living space opens to a covered verandah which overlooks a new pool, positioned so that it is visible from the kitchen and dining room via a slot window.

Durable, robust and natural materials were selected for their thermal mass, and as a contemporary response to the heritage area of brick cottages. A neutral and calm palette allows the inhabitant’s daily activities and belongings to come to the forefront.
