Rydalmere Park Community Centre
ONGOING / Rydalmere, NSW

ONGOING / Rydalmere, NSW
An under-utilised bowling club is revitalised for more diverse activities for a growing population in Parramatta. The adaptive reuse provides a quality, generous community asset maximising accessibility and inclusiveness, that connects to the landscape of parks and sports fields.

Restoring Architectural Coherence
Sited within the wider precinct of Rydalmere Park, undergoing major upgrades, the existing building had undergone a series of additions and modifications, and was overdue for a number of upgrade works.

A number of existing structural elements at the lower ground floor level are retained to reduce the overall building cost, mitigate disturbance of contaminated material and reduce the carbon footprint.
On the ground level a vast covered outdoor dining area wraps round an indoor restaurant/cafe overlooking the surrounding sports fields and park through large glazed windows, increasing the connection to the landscape and natural light and ventilation. Vertical planting and green climbers soften the balustrade bringing in filtered natural light.
The main entrance is an oversized portal, a marker in the landscape. Multiple pop up light wells bring in light, creating a lantern effect and maximising the sense of height and space. The new layout creates universal access. A scalloped facade of durable galvanised steel references the adjacent light industrial zone, adding depth and interest, whilst timber battens reference the residential area nearby.
