Heritage
We recognise the resources already expended in our built environment. And our built heritage is critical to understanding who we are. Heritage is a living thing with a past, a present and a future. We respectfully and pragmatically adapt heritage buildings to suit 21st century needs and ensure that they have a future. Much of our work involves alteration and adaptation of heritage-listed buildings and buildings within heritage conservation areas. We focus on the sensitive connectivity and delineation between old and new through materiality and scale. The old is retained, enhanced and given another life, part reworked, part replaced. Each element is designed and built to last, reducing future waste.
Our approach to heritage is one of respect and pragmatism, in roughly equal measure. We preserve the values of existing fabric, working within heritage constraints, whilst also integrating principles of sustainable design. Drawing on the expertise of heritage consultants we follow the Burra Charter principles for the conservation of heritage places.
